  Objectives: At the conclusion of this unit, participants will be able to: 1. Identify what people being served by the behavioral health field, especially those with mental illness, say they want from case managers – the competencies case managers should have. 2. Identify what people being served say they will help their lives improve 3. Identify key events in the history of mental health treatment for adults with a severe mental illness, such as use of asylums, deinstitutionalization, community support
  Description: Starting with the perspective of the people being served, this unit examines the significant role of case management in the mental health and substance abuse treatment fields. Topics discussed include a brief history of case management and mental health treatment and substance abuse treatment, including examining the deinstitutionalization movement, the community support movement, the mental health consumer movement and outcomes management.
