  Objectives: At the conclusion of this course, you will be able to: --Explain the federal and state definitions of severe mental illness. --Describe the three dimensions used as criteria to determine severe mental illness—diagnosis, disability, and duration. --Describe cognitive deficits that persons with schizophrenia may experience. --And describe the clinical symptoms of schizophrenia.
  Description: This unit defines eligibility criteria for case management services including the federal and state definitions of mental illness, the dimensions of mental illness, and how mental illness impacts people’s lives. Consumers are generally referred to case management services because their mental illness has caused significant disruptive episodes in their lives. Their symptoms may have led to one or more hospitalizations or may have affected their ability to manage aspects of their lives or access useful community resources. --Case management is the process by which persons with severe mental illness receive support in negotiating for the various services that they both want and need in order to improve the quality of their lives. --In this course we will focus on schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.
