Actions for Mental Health in the New Millennium
Relevance: This Executive Summary is relevant for all mental health practitioners and administrators, regardless of their specific disciplines, because it presents a summary of the findings from over 3000 studies in the field of mental health and mental illness, identifying significant factors to consider in working with children, adults and older adults, significant barriers to getting the most effective services to the populations in need and new directions for the field. In doing so, it should direct clinicians to the rest of the report and to the research that identifies the most effective, evidence-based treatment strategies currently available and provide support to them in learning and using those strategies.
Description:
This is the first Surgeon General's report ever issued on the topic of mental health and mental illness. The science-based report conveys several messages. One is that mental health is fundamental to health. A second message of the report is that mental disorders are real health conditions that have an immense impact on individuals and families throughout this nation and the world. The body of this report is a summary of an extensive review of the scientific literature and of consultations with mental health care providers and consumers.
