Objectives:
Readers will be able to summarize the literature on the incidence of exposure to community violence among youth in moderate to high-risk environments and the association of such exposure to the incidence of post-traumatic stress symptoms.
Readers will be able to describe at least one example of the implementation of the three main elements of the school-based group cognitive-behavioral intervention described in this article.
Relevance: With violence in America almost an accepted cultural phenomenon, all clinicians can benefit from learning strategies for helping youth deal more effectively with the psychological and social sequelae of exposure to community violence.
Description:
This article summarizes the literature suggesting that exposure to community violence, whether as victim or witness, is associated with high rates of post-traumatic stress symptoms as well as high rates of depression and anxiety. Further, the authors describe the specific components of a school-based group cognitive-behavioral intervention to be used with youth who have been exposed to community violence and are experiencing distress symptoms.
